Wakame (Wakame) is dried seaweed with a mild, pleasant taste and soft texture, which is why it easily fits into various dishes — from traditional Japanese miso soup to salads, vegetables and legumes. In addition to enriching the dish with natural minerals, they are also known for their numerous health benefits.
Wakame seaweed is extremely rich in calcium, iron, as well as vitamins A, C and B3, and also contains protein and fiber. Thanks to natural alginic acid, they contribute to the detoxification of the body - they bind toxins and heavy metals (such as arsenic, lead and strontium) and help their excretion from the body. Also, studies have shown that ingredients from these algae have a positive effect on blood viscosity and blood pressure regulation, making them a perfect choice for a healthy, balanced diet.
Interestingly, wakame is the only seaweed that is cultivated both naturally and artificially. The cultivation process begins in controlled conditions, where young algae undergo a sensitive period of development and are then transplanted to the ocean floor. Ripe plants are harvested in March and April, after which they are dried with warm air. In taste and composition, they are similar to alaria, a seaweed present in Scottish and Northern European cuisine.
Preparation:
Soak the algae in cold water for 3-5 minutes, then cut them into small pieces and cook for about 10 minutes on low heat. After soaking, they acquire a recognizable vitreous -green color. They can be used in soups, stews, salads or as an addition to cooked vegetables. If roasted and ground into a powder, together with sesame seeds, they make a tasty and nutritious seasoning for legumes and grains.
